Last year: 7-3, lost in Section 4 final
"We're excited because we return basically all our skill players," coach Mike Ramil said. The lines, however, will be as green as about any in the section.
Quarterback Wayne Bonsell passed for three-digit yardage in six games last year, and also rushed for 95-plus in the first two. Receiver Tino Yevchinecz had three or more receptions in seven games, and on opening night had a season-best nine. He heads a cast of catchers that includes Kevin Rowe, Hamza Abdush-Shahid and Wesley Reynolds.
Running back J.J. Jones rushed for 160 or better in four games, and Anthony Penaherrera is back as well.
The offensive front is a group described by line coach Joel Davis as "a bunch of no-names who are ambitious and who bust their butts to learn and to execute." Not a varsity starter returns, and sophomore Nick Garbarino is one of the youngsters who has had at least a sniff of varsity ball.
"We're not going to go out and pound anyone, but we'll be very athletic," Ramil said of the offense. "It's a group with good team speed."
Mohammed Hassanien, Noel Young and Quayshawn Parker are ticketed for defensive-line duty, all having played some varsity defense. Also getting a look up front are Mark Torres, freshman Greg Bostick and sophomore Michael Brown.
Big hitter Delroy Young will man a hybrid safety/linebacker spot and Rahiem Feggins returns in the secondary after making a splash or two last year with key interceptions to go with kick-return prowess -- one going for 86 yards and a score on the opening kickoff against Horseheads.
Other leading defensive candidates include linebackers William Pichura and Romundo Young, and secondary men Clifford Harris, Penaherrera and freshman Scott Wright. Of the latter, Ramil said, "This kid is going to be a good one."
